The Codex Project
Can we define what it means to be a Good Person?
The Codex Project and the Commonwealth of Values
We all know one when we see one. But have we ever agreed which traits and virtues constitute a "good person"?
While there are many philosophical and religious texts which elaborate on what it means to be moral or virtuous, there exists no commonly agreed upon and accepted definition.
We envision a secular codex of conduct, which we simply call The Codex, and a community which agrees and vows to live their lives according to these rules and to recognize each other as fellows in a commonwealth of values:
The Society of Good People.
Plato's Trias:
The Good. The Beautiful. The True.
Imagine society as a bridge. Trust, built from integrity and principles, is the mortar holding the bricks together. Honesty, fairness, compassion – these are the cornerstones that allow us to connect, collaborate, and build something bigger than ourselves. Without them, the bridge crumbles, replaced by a shaky tightrope walk of suspicion and deceit.
Integrity and principles are the handshake of human interaction. They're the unwavering "yes" that follows a promise, the quiet strength that lets us face the mirror without flinching. Integrity ensures our actions echo our beliefs, while principles are the guiding stars on our moral compass.
Respect and dignity are the handshake of humanity. Respect is acknowledging the worth in others, offering a listening ear and a considerate voice. Dignity is the inherent value we all possess, deserving fairness and compassion.
Heroic courage isn't fearlessness, but facing fear for a greater good. It's the unwavering moral strength to act justly, even in peril. This virtue shines in grand acts or quiet defiance, inspiring hope in the face of darkness.
Honor is the inner compass guiding us to do what's right. It's keeping your word, acting with fairness, and holding yourself to high standards. Honor builds trust and respect, making you someone worthy of admiration.
Compassion isn't a passive feeling. It's a fire ignited by another's suffering, urging us closer. It's the volunteer warming a lonely elder's day, the friend offering a listening ear, the stranger sharing their last umbrella. Compassion compels us to act, fostering a world woven with kindness and connection.
Honesty and sincerity are two sides of the same coin. Honesty is the truth you tell, while sincerity is the genuineness behind it. Together, they build trust. Honesty ensures your words are reliable, while sincerity shows you truly mean them. This virtuous combination fosters strong relationships and a world built on authenticity.
Duty and loyalty are pillars of a strong society. Duty compels individuals to fulfill their obligations, ensuring a well-functioning whole. Loyalty, the unwavering dedication to a cause, group, or person, strengthens these bonds. A doctor's duty is to treat patients, but loyalty to the medical oath inspires exceptional care. This virtuous pairing fosters responsibility and trust, creating a foundation for a society where individuals contribute their best and stand by their commitments.
Fairness sets the rules, sportsmanship adds grace. This duo builds respect in competition, where focus shifts from just winning to striving to improve. It shapes character through perseverance, humility, and respect. This creates a stronger society that values both excellence and playing well.
Justice and righteousness pave the path to a fairer world. Justice guarantees fair treatment for all, while righteousness fuels the fight against injustice. Together, they dismantle unequal systems and ensure the rule of law serves everyone. This fosters a society where individuals feel secure, valued, and empowered to contribute, ultimately creating a more just world for all.
Helpfulness and generosity are threads woven into the fabric of a kind society. Helpfulness offers a hand up to those in need, while generosity extends resources or acts of service with an open heart. Together, they create a ripple effect of compassion, fostering a world where people are more likely to support each other. This strengthens communities, builds trust, and ultimately leads to a more caring and prosperous world for all.
Politeness and manners, the oil that smooths social interactions. Politeness keeps words considerate, while manners guide respectful behavior. Together, they create a more pleasant and harmonious society. Friction is reduced, fostering cooperation and understanding. This builds stronger communities, where courtesy becomes the norm and interactions flow with greater ease.
